Research areas allow you to create collections of news stories, faculty, and general information related to that field by creating a ‘term’ for your research area and tagging pages, profiles, and news stories with that term’s name. Research areas are currently enabled and utilized on all College of LAS department sites.

Creating a research area term

  1. To create a new Research  Area term, click the

    structure icon that looks like a stack of papers
    Structure icon, then navigate to Taxonomy > Research  Areas
  2. The Research Areas page will display a list of already created terms (if available) with the option to add a new term by clicking the ‘ + Add term ‘ button.

  3. From the Add term page, add the name of your research area in the Name field. You can also add a description of your research area or any paragraph types to the research area page.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save button to save the term. Once saved, your research area term page will be created at “/research/areas/[your-term-name]”. You will need this URL path if you would like to link to this page from another page or add it to the menu.

Adding a faculty member to a research area

  1. To add a faculty member to a research area page, navigate to their faculty profile page and click the ‘Edit your profile’ link at the bottom of their photo/contact information section. If you do not have access to edit faculty profiles, contact las-web@illinois.edu

  2. You should see a section of checkboxes under the list of roles labeled ‘Research Areas’. Check the box next to the research area the faculty member is associated with, then scroll to the bottom of the page to save the profile.

  3. To remove a faculty member from a research area page, navigate to their faculty profile page, edit their profile, uncheck the box next to the research area they are no longer associated with, then scroll to the bottom of the page to save the profile.

Adding a news article or content page to a research area

  1. To add a news article or content page to a research area, scroll down to the ‘Tags’ section.
  2. In a new tag field, start typing the name of the Research area term you want to associate with this page or news article. When you see the correct term, click to select it.
